We catch ourselves rehearsing conversations that haven’t happened yet and mistake it for preparation. We draw a clear line between planning well and living in the future, then share a simple practice to protect your energy and lead with presence.
• noticing the habit of running future conversations in your head
• understanding how preparation becomes prediction and then anxiety
• borrowing energy from the present and arriving exhausted
• learning from a golf putt to focus on what matters
• preparing for tomorrow without mentally moving there

Morning Brief And Intentional Pause

SPEAKER_00

Good morning. Here's the time and energy morning brief for Wednesday, July 15th, 2026. Five intentional minutes before the world starts asking things of us.

The Hidden Habit Of Mental Rehearsal

SPEAKER_00

I caught myself doing something the other day, and I think a lot of us do without even realizing it. I was thinking about a conversation I had later that afternoon. Except I wasn't actually having the conversation. I was rehearsing it, anticipating every question, imagining every objection, planning every response. By the time I arrived, I'd already had the meeting ten times in my head. What's interesting is almost none of the conversations we rehearse ever unfold the way we imagine they would. And yet we spend an incredible amount of energy living in moments that haven't happened. I don't think we do this because we're pessimistic. I think we do it because we care. We want to be prepared. We want to perform well. We want to avoid being caught

When Preparation Turns Into Anxiety

off guard. Those are good instincts. But there's a point where preparation quietly becomes prediction. And prediction often becomes anxiety.

Borrowing Energy From The Present

SPEAKER_00

Here's the problem. When we're mentally living in the future, we're borrowing energy from the present. We haven't

had the meeting yet, but we're already tired. We haven't received the feedback, but we're already discouraged. We haven't stepped onto the stage, but our heart is already racing. Our bodies don't always know the difference between an imagined challenge and a real one. So they begin preparing for both. That's exhausting.

Peaceful Leaders Return To Now

SPEAKER_00

I've noticed that some of the most peaceful leaders I know aren't necessarily the ones with the fewest difficult conversations ahead of them. They're the ones who've learned to stay where their feet are. They prepare. Then they return to the present. Because they understand something important. You can prepare for tomorrow without living there. That's a subtle distinction, but it changes everything. It reminds me of something I've learned on the golf course. Standing over a putt, there are only two things that really matter: reading the line and making the stroke. Thinking about what happens if you miss doesn't improve either one. In fact, it usually makes both worse. Leadership works the same way. The next conversation deserves your attention. Not every possible version of that conversation. The next decision deserves your best thinking. Not every outcome you can't

Time Fixed Energy Aligns

SPEAKER_00

control. Time is fixed. Energy is renewable, but only when it's aligned. One of the fastest ways to drain your energy is to spend it solving problems that don't exist yet. That doesn't mean we ignore the future. It means we refuse to live there prematurely.

A Simple Practice For Today

SPEAKER_00

So here's one thing you might try today. If you notice yourself rehearsing a conversation that hasn't happened yet, stop for a moment and ask yourself, what part of this can I actually prepare for? Do that. Write a few notes. Clarify your intention. Think about the questions you want to ask, then let the rest go. Because the person you're going to meet deserves the real you, not the version of you that's already exhausted from fighting imaginary battles.

Presence As The Core Of Leadership

SPEAKER_00

Leadership is the impact your presence has on others. And presence becomes very difficult when your mind has already left the room. Today, see if you can stay where your feet are. You may discover that the present moment has more than enough to ask of you. It doesn't need tomorrow's worries added to it.
